Split a long video for WhatsApp Status
A Status video can only run for a limited time, so long videos get cut off. Split your video into back-to-back parts right in your phone's browser, then post them as a series of Statuses. No app to install.
How to split a video for WhatsApp Status
- 1
Open the video on your phone
Tap “Choose file” and pick the video from your gallery. It stays on your phone; nothing is uploaded.
- 2
Set the length of each part
30 seconds is already selected. If your WhatsApp accepts longer Statuses, type a bigger number to get fewer parts.
- 3
Save all parts to your gallery
Tap “Download all videos” and wait for the parts to process. Then tap “Save to gallery” and choose Save Videos (iPhone) or your gallery app (Android).
- 4
Post them in order
Files are numbered (name_clip_01, name_clip_02 and so on), so you can add them to your Status in the right order.
How long should each part be?
WhatsApp has changed the Status length limit over time, and it can differ between app versions. That is why you choose the length here instead of us guessing it.
30-second parts are a safe start. Not sure what your app allows? Post one longer part as a test. If WhatsApp cuts it, go back to 30 seconds.
Help friends follow the story
Statuses play one after another, so a cut in the middle of a sentence can be confusing. Set “Overlap between parts” to 1 or 2 seconds to repeat the end of each part at the start of the next.
You can also tick “Add a part number to each clip” in the “Text & logo” tab. Each part then shows “Part 1/4”, “Part 2/4” and so on.
Tips for Status videos
- Keep “Original” in “Resize & rotate” to post the video as it is. Choose “Reels” (9:16) if you want a vertical video that fills the phone screen.
- Want music instead of the original sound? Open “Music” and use “Import voice or music”, then choose which part of the song plays.
- Only need part of the video? Use “Trim video” first, and only that part is split.
- Choose “Smaller file” in the “Export” tab if you want parts that are quicker to send.
- Phones process video more slowly than computers. For a long video, close other apps and keep the tab open.
