Split a long video for Instagram Stories
A long video won't fit in one Story, and a landscape video looks small in a vertical frame. Split your video into short clips and export each one in 9:16, so every piece fills the screen.
How to split a video for Instagram Stories
- 1
Open your video
Tap “Choose file” on your phone or drop the file on your computer. It is processed in your browser, not uploaded.
- 2
Choose the clip length
15 seconds per clip is selected for you. Type another number of seconds if you want longer or shorter Stories.
- 3
Fit or fill the 9:16 frame
“Reels” (9:16) is already chosen in “Resize & rotate”. Pick “Fit” to keep the whole picture with a “Blur” or color background, or “Fill” to crop it full-screen. Check the live preview.
- 4
Save and post in order
On a phone, tap “Download all videos”, then “Save to gallery”. Clips are numbered, so add them to your Story in order.
Fit or Fill: which looks better?
“Fill” crops the video so it covers the whole Story. It suits a person talking or anything in the middle of the frame. If the subject is off to one side, change “Crop position” to Left or Right.
“Fit” keeps the whole picture and fills the empty space above and below. It suits wide shots, slides and screen recordings, where cropping would cut off something important. “Blur” uses a soft copy of your video as the background; a color can match your brand.
Choosing a Story length
Instagram has changed how long a Story video can be, so you choose the length here. Short clips keep each Story quick to tap through; longer clips mean fewer Stories to post.
One export, many platforms
The “Reels” format is 1080×1920 (9:16). The same clips also work for Instagram Reels, TikTok, Facebook Reels and YouTube Shorts-shaped videos.
Tips for Stories that look right
- Leave space at the top and bottom of the frame for Instagram's buttons and your stickers.
- Turn on “Add a part number to each clip” in “Text & logo” so viewers know there is more to come.
- To add music, open “Music”, use “Import voice or music” and choose which part of the song plays. The music continues across the parts in order.
- Shot the video sideways? Use “Rotate left” or “Rotate right” in “Resize & rotate” before you download.
